His mother. like my mother...
His mother - like my mother - said:
take care and be good my dearest son.
At the station tears she shed
when in the distance he was gone.
Move of her hands halfway suspends,
while his clothes she caringly mends;
her strong fingers slacken and drop
the partially-shelled yellow corncob;
or in the yard she comes to halt
surprised by a sudden alarm,
she softly whispers: oh, my God
save my child from any harm.
The mother weeps in Russian
somewhere, far away for her son
and neither does she understand
what they’re doing in foreign land.
His mother - like my mother - prays
and could not possibly be aware:
her son in the Budapest haze
fired his rifle at me straightaway.
