presents

Kálmán Balogh & The Gypsy Cimbalom Band

with special guests

3 Leg Torso

Gypsy Jazz

On Sunday April 6th, 2003 celebrated Roma musician, Kálmán Balogh brings his critically acclaimed Gypsy Cimbalom Band from Budapest, Hungary to Portland. The Gypsy Cimbalom Band’s vibrant and high-spirited music, an amalgam of traditional Eastern European folk, gypsy rhythms and American swing with elements of jazz, guarantee an entertaining concert for everyone. Also appearing with The Gypsy Cimbalom Band as special guests will be Portland’s own favorite interpreters of dialectical instrumentalism, 3 Leg Torso.

Kálman has played in a variety musical genres since his youth: Hungarian folk, gypsy, classical, contemporary, ragtime, klezmer and modern jazz are all part of his forté, proving the complexity and musical value of his instrument, the Hungarian cimbalom. As an artist he is a much sought after performer performing with Hungarian Folk groups Muzsikás, the Ökrös Ensemble, symphonies and philharmonics, a multitude of European folk, gypsy, klezmer and jazz groups. He has even performed with the UK’s house, trance, and world beat music favorites Transglobal Underground. Kálmán also performed with the Ökrös Ensemble in last years Oregon Symphony’s Nerve Endings Gypsy Fire concert.

In 1994 Kálmán had the idea of founding a band with his friends, who were playing in a variety of different musical genres. The recipe was simple, take three urban gypsy musicians add two folk musicians and throw in jazz musician for good measure and the Gypsy Cimbalom Band was born. The idea worked brilliantly. In 1999 the group released their American debut CD, Gypsy Jazz on Rounder records to rave reviews.

The band seeks the meeting points amongst different musical genres in melody, rhythm, harmony and form, utilizing the improvisational talents of the members. They are a unique combination of talented virtuoso’s who have fun while performing and always extend the party to their audience.

Complimenting their performance will be Portland’s own equally gifted, 3 Leg Torso. Their repertoire combines modern chamber music, tango, Latin, Middle Eastern and Eastern European folk music, coupled with a cinematic sense of musical storytelling that bridges the worlds of serious art and popular culture. Their musical travelogue takes audiences through a landscape of playful and passionate music.
