Under the leadership of Maximilian, Prince of Bavaria, an imperial army numbering 32.000 men and 28 guns surrounded Nándorfejérvár (Belgrade) on August 9, and, in a 2 hour bloody battle, recaptured the city. Belgrade, which had been a part of Hungary, had been held by the Turks since 1521, or 167 years.
